Wilmarie
Janse van Rensburg – South Africa’s fastest woman
Wilmarie
Janse van Rensburg of Wilgeheuwel Roodepoort is South Africa’s
fastest woman, having set two new South African lap records in
the 250cc motorcycle racing championships. In 2003 she was selected
to be one of Cosmopolitan magazine’s awesome women for that
year.
Wilmarie
was South Africa’s first female superbike racer. Her love
affair with motor bikes began in high school when she raced in
the 50cc class. Having also raced 125cc and 250cc bikes, she prefers
the faster and more competitive 600cc class.
Wilmarie
is the CEO of Speed Queen Racing Academy which provides bike and
ATV training, track days and corporate and team building events.

Rosy
Hodge, pro surfer
Rosy
Hodge of East London is a pro surfer who has represented South
Africa since the age of 11. She has competed in the Wild Card
Trials in the world championship tour events such as the Roxy
Pro in Hawaii, Australia and Fiji in 2004 and 2005, as well as
winning numerous South African titles.
Rosy began surfing at the age of seven and was the youngest female
to receive Junior South African colours.
She is one of five surfers from around the world who are sponsored
by Roxy International. This sponsorship affords Rosy the opportunity
to enter the World Qualifying Series of surf contests in 2006.

Liezel
Gené Maree, helicopter pilot
Flying
helicopters has been Liezel Gené Maree’s passion
since she was 17. Encouraged by her mother’s suggestion
to “get a hobby”, she could fly a helicopter before
she could drive. Liezel is currently rated on R22 and R44 helicopters
and has completed her mountain and coastal flying courses. Originally
from Magaliessig Fourways, Liezel has turned her hobby into her
career.

Lerato
Joy Monareng, racing driver
Lerato
Joy Monareng of Mondeor, Johannesburg, is one of the first Black
female motor car racers in South Africa. She has raced in the
Vodacom Power Tour for three years, in the Sports 2000 and the
Gauteng and Natal regional rallies.
Lerato
became involved in motor sport in 2002 when she was selected from
among hundreds of males who showed up for trials for a development
racing programme. Since then she has made her mark in a predominantly
male environment. As part of her passion for motor sport she also
writes motoring columns for True Love and Y magazines and presents
the new A1 Grand Prix on SABC3. |

Sam
Meyrick, jetski pilot
Sam
Meyrick of Kloof, Durban finished the 2004/5 jetski racing season
second in the championship, and has been the only female in the
National Tour field. She has twice represented South Africa at
the Jetski World Finals in the USA and is the youngest and only
female pilot to finish the trans Agulhas endurance race.
Samantha
began riding jetskis at 10 years of age. She joined the National
Tour at 16 and won the SA Championship (1200 runabout) in the
2003/4 racing season.
She
completes matric in 2005 before studying for a BSc at Pretoria
University in 2006. |

Rika
Olivier, downhill cyclist
In
2005, downhill cyclist Rika Olivier of Constantia, Cape Town,
won three of the four Western Province downhill cycling races,
three of the four SA National races and came second in the SA
Champs. She was placed 34th in the UCI World Championship.
Rika
began riding mountain bikes eight years ago. After seeing a national
race in Tokai forest where she rode often, she realised she was
not much worse than the girls she saw racing and traded in her
bicycle for a full suspension model. She entered the first race
that came along, and from then it was a never ending process of
trading in bicycles, racing, and the occasional injury such as
a broken arm in 2001.

Leandra
Le Forestier, 15 times SA water skiing champion
Leandra
Le Forestier of Helderkruin, Roodepoort, is a 15 times South African
water skiing champion (junior and senior) and 7 times African
champion. She has national colours and has competed several times
in the World and European championships.
When
not on the water Leandra is a registered nurse in neuro surgery
at Krugersdorp Hospital and has three young children.

Belinda
Webbstock, dirt bike and motoX rider
Belinda
Webbstock of Pietermaritzburg is a pit bike, dirt bike and moto
cross rider, a scuba diver and a Springbok and South African champion
powerlifter. Belinda won the world powerlifting championship title
and best overall lifter in Ohio, USA in 1996.
She
is a partner in SuperMoto Promotions which organises and runs
the National Supermoto series in South Africa.

Nikki
Snelling
Nikki
Snelling of Fourways began snowboarding in Utah, U.S.A. in 2000.
She was placed 2nd in the South African sandboarding championships
freestyle in 2004 and 4th overall in the final of the Snowscapes
snowboarding competition for 2005. She works as an interior designer/project
manager.

Beverly
Cosslett, skydiver
Skydiver
Beverly Cosslett of Sunninghill, Gauteng is the South African
record holder, along with three others, of the most number of
jumps in a day (100). She was awarded her Protea colours in 2004
and represented South Africa at the World Championships in Croatia.
Beverly
has been skydiving for eight years and has taken part in over
1300 skydives. Her speciality is four-way formation, and she also
enjoys wingsuits, freefly and canopy piloting. She is a skydive
instructor.

Naureen
Goheer, rock climber
Naureen
Goheer of Rondebosch, Cape Town enjoys both sport and trad rock
climbing and has climbed routes of between 5m and 500m long around
the world. Her current hardest redpoint is SA grade 27.
When
Naureen is not climbing she is a post-doctoral research fellow
at UCT.

Olivia
Jones, diver and bodyboarding champion
Olivia
Jones of the Bluff, Durban spends as much time as she can either
catching waves or under the water. She is a qualified rescue diver
and her passion is freediving – cray fishing and spear fishing.
Olivia
joined Nippers, the junior lifesaver classes, at 13 and went on
to qualify as a lifeguard, performing voluntary duties for many
years. After watching her surfer boyfriend in action “for
hours on end” she and a friend leapt off the pier with bodyboards,
after which there was no holding her back. She went to Hawaii
for the 1996/97 bodyboarding season and competed on the South
African Bodyboarding Association tour for almost ten years, becoming
a KZN bodyboarding champion. Switching focus somewhat, Olivia
was on the Southern KZN Surfing Team in 2004.
Olivia
still has time to run her own company publicising extreme sports
events, and enjoys horse riding.
